Perseverance.

I don’t think there’s any character trait that I need more as a parent than perseverance. When you finally fold that last load of laundry and put it away only to find the hamper is full again, when you keep giving your kids the same instructions over and over, when you think that if you have to go to one more school activity you just might break, you need some perseverance!

Hebrews 12:1-3 is all about the secret to perseverance, and it’s the basis for the Doorpost Songs “Finish the Race,” from the album This Is LoveTake a listen!

Most of the time when we know we have to persevere, we reach for that one last ounce of strength, that final burst of energy to carry us over the finish line. But what happens when the finish line keeps moving? What happens when our strength and energy are all tapped out and we’re coming up empty?

The truth is that the key to perseverance is not strength or discipline or training or effort. The key to perseverance is keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,” Hebrews 12 says. “Consider him…so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
