His excited grin. Plump cheeks. His tiny hands clutching the obligatory “My First Day of Kindergarten” sign. 

Facebook memories had done it again. I sat at the breakfast table and scrolled through pictures of my now 6th-grade son’s first day of “big” school. These photos carried me back momentarily to a time when his shoes weren’t bigger than mine and I still stashed little notes in his lunch box.

How dare you, Facebook.

It’s fine. I’m fine. #imsonotfine

While our family homeschooled during the 2020-2021 school year, this year everyone’s headed back to the classroom. And while my momma’s heart can’t quite keep pace with the milestones and seasons that are zooming past, I’m comforted by the fact that when my three children leave the house to face the day, they never go alone.

God promises this in Deuteronomy 31:8, the verse that our song “Lift Your Head” is based on:

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

And while my mind buzzes with all the to-dos and supplies needed to launch our kids into a new school year, God gently reminds me that everything my kids need is found in Him. 

So while I scroll away through old photos, reminiscing about chubby cheeks and lunchbox notes, I’m also reminded that each and every day God’s very presence goes before them, will be with them, and will never leave them. Thank you, Jesus.
